Melross Farm is located on 240 acres of prime Kangaroo Valley estate, and as we approach the luxury Willows farmhouse to meet owners John and Terrene Cask, a herd of cows meandering across the track reminds us that Melross is a real working farm as well as a spectacular setting for rustic weddings.
There's further evidence of farm life as Terrene leads us on an off-road expedition of Melross Farm and along the way reveals that this is the land where Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman trained to ride horses and practice the art of cutting cattle for the movie Australia.
There are the four properties on Melross Farm, all of which can be rented for short stays or weddings. The Willows farmhouse is the star, comfortably accommodating fourteen guests in beautifully appointed surroundings. Its huge French farmhouse kitchen is undeniably the heart of the house while the home theatre, snooker room and verandah provide alternative places to relax. The cosy Willows cottage directly behind the farmhouse is perfect for two guests while a couple of minutes away sit the Rye House and Millet House farmhouses which accommodate a further ten guests each. With a combined capacity of up to thirty-six guests Melross Farm offers the perfect opportunity to combine a wedding with a short break surrounded by your nearest and dearest.
Ceremonies generally take place in the sizable field directly outside Millet House, making this farmhouse a favourite spot for the bride to get ready and make her entrance from. The field itself is surrounded by a distant cliff escarpment that enhances an outdoor ceremony with dramatic views and provides a picturesque backdrop for photos.
A marquee also comes highly recommended as a guardian from the valley's evening breezes and cool climate and, of course, to provide a dancefloor. Melross' preferred supplier is locally based South Coast Party Hire whose range of marquees and pagodas can accommodate north of 150 guests. Bear in mind, however, that unless you have brought in a planner or stylist, once the marquee is set up the rest of the work is up to you. So with that in mind, we recommend arriving at Melross a couple of days before the big day so you can style, decorate and achieve the look you want at your leisure and stay cool by indulging in an occasional dip in the pool.
